A quick notice on the Exchange Team re-releasing hotfix KB979744 after identifying the issue which could cause problems on Windows Server 2008 SP2 (not R2). The problem can lead to Exchange Management Shell or Exchange Management Console not starting, MRS crashing or Event Viewer not opening after installing MS11-028 (KB2449742 or KB2449741, depending on your Windows Server 2008 level).
If you didn’t install the MS11-028 hotfix yet:
- Install KB979744-v2;
- Install MS11-028.
If you have the MS11-028 hotfix installed and you experience the issue:
- Install KB2449742-v2 over it.
Thanks for the valuable post.
We’re planning to upgrade Exchange 2010 to SP3 but couldn’t find healthy copy of KB979744. Tried one from http://thehotfixshare.net/board/index.php?autocom=downloads&showfile=11823 but faced issues with Microsoft Console, Event Viewer etc.
The links posted above for KB979744-V2 and KB2449742-V2 lead to “The Archive Gallery has been retired”.
I’ll be grateful if you could please share an alternate link.

Same here. I just inherited and unservice packed Exchange 2010 running on Server 2008 SP2. Like Hasanat when the hotfixshare.net was installed Exchange Powershell and the Exchange 2010 SP crashed on launch. I love the fact that Microsoft says the fix is scheduled to be released in Server 2008 SP3.

Use an unpatched OS/image before installing this patch. Check if KB2446710 is installed – if so, remove it and try installing KB979744, install Exchange, then reapply KB2446710.
