When I try to install the new release I receive die following message
Unable to install because a previous interim update for exchange server 2013 cumulative 1 has been installed
When I try and remove it via add or remove programmes it gets to a stage where its looking for the exchangeserver.msi, and that’s where I get stuck.
When I select the exchangeserver.msi from my media I get the following error
the exchangeserver.msi is not a valid installation package for the Microsoft exchange server product.

I have exactly the same error, the KB2874216 is the first before 27th of august, and it cant be uninstalled, or upgraded. Phew.

On a summary note: you don’t need to uninstall security fixes before upgrading from CU1 to CU2; you do need to uninstall any interim updates. However, if installation fails for some reason you may end up with disabled Exchange-related services which won’t allow reinstallation of the CU or uninstallation of the interim update. You may need to manually set startup to Manual and start those services. Also note that you need to (re)install the v2 version of the security fix after installing CU2: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39904

Thanks, but I have to disagree, since the cu2 update stalls with http://blogs.dirteam.com/blogs/davestork/archive/2013/09/25/failed-exchange-server-2013-cu2-install-due-to-security-update-2874216.aspx Unable to remove product with code 4934d1ea-be46-48b1-8847-f1af20e892c1. Fatal error during installation. Error code is 1603. I suggest v1 of the fix is a interim fix, as the error when i try to install v2 gives -> Unable to install because a previous interim update for exchange server 2013 cumulative 1 has been installed. But then I cant install v1 when i present the CU1 folder, ->the exchangeserver.msi is not a valid installation package for the Microsoft exchange server product. Catch 22

For those who found this, I know you are in trouble; a quick update became a nightmare. I thought making a snapshot of the vm was good enough as backup but the patch preps the AD and breaks everything.
[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v15\Setup]
removed “InterimUpdate”=”2874216”
that was the fix after a 2 hours call to MS OAS; hope this saves you $499 because Exchange 2013 is EOL so our usual support tickets don’t count.
