MapiExceptionNotFound: Unable to delete mailbox

Johan Veldhuis blogged about the problem we encountered when moving mailboxes cross-forest from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 (also see my 2-part article on cross-forest move). We received the following mailbox move failure message:

Warning: Unable to update AD information for the source mailbox at the end of the move.  Error details: An error occurred while updating a user object after the move operation. –> Failed to find the address type object in Active Directory for address type “SMTP:AMD64″.

Failed to cleanup the source mailbox after the move.
Error details: MapiExceptionNotFound: Unable to delete mailbox. (hr=0Ă—8004010f, ec=-2147221233)

So, besides an Exchange 2010 mailbox the Exchange 2003 mailbox was still there, and AD attributes weren’t changed on the source AD object (e.g. HomeMDB still pointing to Exchange 2003). This is a potential serious condition as incoming e-mail might be delivered to the Exchange 2003 mailbox instead of the new Exchange 2010 mailbox, depending on your setup and speed to remove the source mailbox.

To assist with this issue Microsoft released hotfix 940012 for Exchange 2003. It will generate an event on Exchange 2003 when it cannot remove the mailbox. It will also log which folder might be the culprit. After detecting and identifying  the mailbox with issues, you still need to remove it manually (steps should be known; if not, they’re contained in the kb article).

You can view kb article 940012 here and download the related hotfix for Exchange Server 2003 SP2(!) through here.

Windows Phone 7 to support multiple Exchange accounts

I seem to have missed the news from a few days back that during a broadcast on the @ch9live development network , Joe Belfiore, Microsoft Corporate Vice President for Windows Mobile, confirmed multiple Exchange account support in Windows Phone 7 Series. Goodbye to unsupported hacks or POP/IMAP’ing those additional Exchange boxes. I assume includes all the additional benefits like Direct Push (hello battery life!).

In addition, Belfiore stated that on Windows Phone 7 various calendars will be displayed in a single view using coler coding to differentiate between the calendars (i.e. accounts).

Thanks to fellow Exchange guy Magnus Björk for spotting this one.

Remote Desktop Connection Manager

A few days ago, Microsoft released an installable Remote Desktop Connection Manager, or RDCMan for short. RDCMan (v2.2) looks like the MMC version of Remote Desktops, but contains additional functionality like grouping and export/import. Great for people working in lab or demo environments where you have to switch back and forth  – and manage – a lot of remote sessions.

You can download Remote Desktop Connection Manager here.

W2008 R2 Hyper-V architecture poster

Since most of us working with Exchange have – directly or indirectly – to do with virtualization technologies, we would like to inform you Microsoft published a Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V architecture poster, much like they did for Exchange 2007 (no sign of Exchange 2010 versions yet).

This poster – in PDF format – is a nice reference for key Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V technologies. It focuses on subjects like networking, storage, live migration, snapshotting and management.

You can download the PDF here.

Public Folder DAV-Admin Tool updated

The PFDAVAdmin tool has been updated to version 6.05.8170. As you probably know, PFDAVAdmin can be used to perform management tasks related to Exchange’s public folders and mailboxes and is supported on Exchange 2000, Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2007.

You can download  it from here.
